What I Know About Skylanders Giants

by Dan on February 7, 2012

Hey, looks like that URL from a few weeks back was real. Today in New York City, in preparation for the annual Toy Fair trade show, Activision announced Skylanders Giants, the follow-up to Spyro’s Adventure. Here’s the high points:

Skylanders just got bigger.
I know the game is a hit, but the new figures really are big — there will be eight figures that are each twice the size of standard Skylanders, and that’s both in-game and out. The one Giant character they’ve revealed is Tree Rex.

Tree Rex poses with Stealth Elf for scale...and friendship

Giants aren’t the only new characters.
In addition to the big guys, there will be eight normal-sized Skylanders. I don’t know if these will fall into existing elemental categories (which might mean one new one per element) or if there’s something else planned. Alchemist is named in the screenshots.

Some of them light up.
According to the press information, some of the new characters light up when they sit on the Portal of Power. No batteries are required for this, so I’m curious to see exactly how it works.

Your existing characters work in the new game.
All the Skylanders in your collection are forward-compatible, and they retain any stats and items you’ve collected for them. Maybe this is a good reason to top them all up between now and the release of the new game.

It’s coming out this fall.
The only release date is “Fall 2012,” but the development duties are once again handled by Toys For Bob. The platforms listed are PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, and “mobile and handheld” — but no idea exactly which ones yet. I do not expect that date to get more specific until later on in the year.

Remember, there are still characters for the original game that have yet to appear on store shelves, so we may not hear anything new for some time. But when we do, I’ll post about it!

Very keen to know just how large the Giants are on the portal. No new portal is claimed to be needed, but images so far aren’t clear as to whether you can fit a small Skylander alongside a Giant. If not, I’d like to know how that effects co-op and whether multiple portals or a larger portal would be needed for that aspect.

The mobile part of the “mobile and handheld” listing intrigues me. Most likely it would use the code that comes with each figure but most phones come with a mini-USB port these days. Or newer phones will have NFC (near field communication) built in.

“images so far aren’t clear as to whether you can fit a small Skylander alongside a Giant”

But…that’s exactly what is shown above.

I’m curious to know how it will be implemented on mobile — is this an extension of the web world Universe, or is this a dedicated app? The 3DS portal does come with a mini-USB cable so if the hardware already exists, maybe they will opt to have mobile devices interact with the portal. That is part of the fun, after all.

No mention of a PC version, but I’m guessing that the Giants will work with the online version of the game as well.

    ^Video for everyone^

I’ve read about the Toys R Us 30-day timed exclusive for the Dragon’s Peak Adventure Set (the one with Sunburn, the “Phoenix-Dragon”) in March, Legendary Trigger Happy, and translucent blue Bash also being exclusive. Not so sure that is a great idea by limiting those, given how limited the regular one’s are as it stands.

Also, I’m not a fan of the $25 pricing on the three packs and the $10 pricing on the individuals at TRU when you can get the same figures for $8/9 and $20 per three pack/adventure pack from WalMart, Target, Best Buy, Amazon, etc. At least, these are how they are priced in my Indianapolis market.I’m just curious as to how they will handle and meet the demands this go-’round for Skylanders Giants.

I’m hoping for some DLC content as well.. where are the premium themes and can we please get some Skylander’s “pets” for our avatars??

I think the 3 pack with the accessories (ship, house, etc) are the DLC or expansion pack for the game, so there would be no need to have DLC for the game(guessing ).

That’s not what I meant JeyNyce. I meant, Downloadable Content for the Xbox and Playstation Dashboards. Themes and Xbox Live Avatar items. Not in-game content. I agree though, they pretty much have in-game content covered with the toys.

    More info from the interwebs!!

From the pics, Alchemist is a Magic Element Skylander. Looks as though Cynder and Zook are getting new molds for the game with the orange bases. Looking forward to what other alt mold possibilities there may be for other existing 1.0 Skylander characters..

The new, unnamed, air element character that looks like an eagle with a fan gun, looks fun from the video. I’d name him Stratos if it were possible. Just like a character from the 80′s He-Man cartoon. Haha.

Great little round up of the Skylanders Giants news Dan. I’m becoming a regular reader of your various musings. I’ve put together a little FGTV Show about Skylanders Giants if you are interested http://www.wired.com/geekdad/2012/02/skylanders-giants-fgtv/ I also wrote some thoughts about the new figures here: http://www.wired.com/geekdad/2012/02/skylanders-giants-confirmed/

I’m really intereted to hear more about the new game and particularly how the old figures can be used, and whether they have any limitations.

Finally had a chance to interview the Activision CEO about it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69nAQ-3mPXs
Would love to hear your thoughts on those as well as any other news for the upcoming Skylanders game. There seems to be so much to talk about.

Any update on the release date other than “Fall 2012″?
