A Different Kind of Van Halen Giveaway

by Dan on February 6, 2012

Yes, this is my actual laptop.

I am a major Van Halen fan. I wrote about the band a few times in my former life, and I bleed red, white, and black. I had already taken my fandom into the game realm back in 2007, so when rumors of a VH edition of Guitar Hero first surfaced, I was all over them, and even helped foster them. However, when the game finally came out in late 2009 as little more than a preorder incentive, I was a little sad. I hoped this game would be an opportunity for everybody to appreciate one of my favorite bands. As a result, getting people to play Guitar Hero: Van Halen is still one of my goals — for the music more than anything.

This week, Van Halen’s new album, A Different Kind of Truth — the first with original singer David Lee Roth since 1984′s, uh, 1984 — hits stores. Amazon says my copy is already en route. And now I get to do a Van Halen giveaway in honor of this hopefully not-super-disappointing musical event.

It’s not well known, but there is an official GHVH controller faceplate. I have just two of these left; they fit on either PS3 or Xbox 360 guitars from GHWT or Guitar Hero 5. That being the case, the faceplate will come with copies of the game for both platforms.

So we can all save the earth a little bit Right Now, I have some USB GH battery chargers, with a spare battery for non-stop rocking:

I’ve also got some other doodads in the prize closet — mini GH guitar toys, a flaming GH guitar strap, a nice GH logo hat, because hatters gonna hat.

And I promise there will be more GH goodies in there as well. They’re small, but fans will get a kick out of them. Let’s leave it as a surprise.

I have two of these prize packs to give away. Just answer the trivia question correctly and fill out the form before the end of Wednesday, February 15, and I’ll send out some FedEx boxes later in the week. [UPDATE: Forgot to add a link to the FAQ, which says I don't do anything devious with your personal information.] One entry per person please, and may you have better luck than Gary Cherone.

UPDATE 2/16: Congrats to Eric Beam of Mahonoy City, PA and Keith Fischetti from Moriches NY — they both knew Michael Anthony is the one true bassist of Van Halen. :) They’re getting prize packs soon!

The trivia question’s a little vague. Do you mean when they were officially “Van Halen” or when they went by older names?

  • http://oneofswords.com Dan

Only one name of those options fits.

  • http://oneofswords.com/ Dan (OneOfSwords)

It’s a Van Halen trivia question about a band named Van Halen. Not a band named Mammoth. Of the options, only one name fits.

The comment about Gary Cherone is too funny! Enjoyed playing MW3 with you and your clan on Friday. Hope to see you online again soon!

Sorry Dan I should have put a smile or something at the end of my comment.  The list of answers made it clear as to who you were looking for.
Thoughts on the new album? Sounds fairly solid.  Can’t wait to see them in the Tacoma Dome!

Love Van Halen! Plus I do not have guitar hero yet so this prize would be SWEET!

I still find that whole Gary Cherone thing weird. I was happy to see him back with Extreme when they reunited a couple years ago.

I saw Van Halen twice back in 1992 and 1993 and they were some of my favorite shows to date. GH Van Halen and GH:WoR are the only two from the series I do not own, so this would be a nice addition to the collection.

The game was actually pretty good as far as the songs go…. But it did feel a little dated from the start. If only they used the same engine from GH5 rather than the old World Tour engine it would have had a much better feel to it.

  • http://oneofswords.com/ Dan (OneOfSwords)

Yeah, it was started at the same time as GH Metallica, I think, and as a result it was built on the latest iteration of the engine — which was before GH5. I keep hoping for a track export.
