The Guitar Hero Importapalooza Giveaway

by Dan on August 23, 2010

One of the tricks I didn’t expect Activision to pull off last year was that you’d be able to import tracks from previous Guitar Hero games into your GH song library. For a small fee (which changes based on the game, because each game has a different number of songs cleared for import), you can bring many songs from GH World Tour, GH Smash Hits, Band Hero, and Guitar Hero 5 into your current library — and all those imported tracks will work with Guitar Hero Warriors of Rock when it ships in late September.

So I am pleased to offer the Guitar Hero Importapalooza giveaway. I have nine prize packs to give away: three copies of Guitar Hero 5, Guitar Hero Smash Hits, and Guitar Hero World Tour for Xbox 360, three for PS3, and three for Wii. Whatever your platform of choice, you have three chances to win all three games.

I have three of each of these prize packs to give away.

Using a code printed on the game’s manual, you can import 35 tracks from World Tour, 21 tracks from Smash Hits, and 69 tracks from Guitar Hero 5. That’s 125 songs for your Guitar Hero library, ready to go when Warriors of Rock comes out (and WoR will feature new challenges for all existing DLC and import tracks). I’ll give you the games for free; you cover the import costs, which amounts to a few bucks for each game. Neversoft has written a nice FAQ about the import process here, including a complete track list of the songs that are importable.

“But Dan,” I hear you cry. “I expect more from my giveaways. Surely OneOfSwords can do better than $180 worth of free games?”

You’re right, of course — how thoughtless of me. In addition to the games, every winner will get a Guitar Hero rechargeable battery kit with an extra battery, so you can save the earth whilst you rock non-stop. I’ll also throw in a pair of Travis Barker’s signature Zildjian drumsticks, emblazoned with the World Tour logo.

Battery packs for conserving energy; drumsticks for expending it

To enter, it’s easy: send an email to freestuff@oneofswords.com with one of the following subject lines: GH Import Xbox, GH Import PS3, or GH Import Wii (or just click on those titles and a new mail window should open). Include your name, address with zip code, and phone number, and send it no later than 11:59pm Pacific Time on August 29, 2010. If you are a multiplatform gamer, you can enter all three platform giveaways (one entry per giveaway per person please), but if by random chance your name comes up as a winner twice, I will pick someone else for the second pack — that feels only fair. Please note that these are the North American versions of the game and the import codes — let alone the games themselves — may not work in your native land. The drumsticks, however, should be totally compatible with international rhythm standards. Check the Contest FAQ for more info.

Thanks to the Guitar Hero team for making this one possible — good luck to all who enter!

UPDATE: Surprise — winners got a little extra love in the form of a copy of GH Van Halen, a GH keychain, and a GH hot-rod flames faceplate. Didn’t want to promise it if I wasn’t sure I could get it all, but the GH team came through — thanks guys!

Wii Winners: Jim Hayes, Nottingham MD; Janice Wei, Buena Park CA; Bradley Boester, Rochester NY
Xbox Winners: Colin Epstein, Albany CA; Chris Milewsky, Convent Station NJ; Michael Wooden, Sandoval IL
PS3 Winners: John Cartmel, Ontario, Canada; Mike Weiland, Prescott WI; Parker Wolford, Pittsburg CA

Almost had a Finland winner until I hit shipping issues, so I picked a new winner. Sorry, Finland — I’ll try to work that out for next time.

    Did you just post this?

Totally awesome! Too bad I already own all these games and have imported the songs into GH5.

I’m assuming they will carry over to GHWOR? Plus I will have to import the GH5 stuff into GHWOR?

    Absolutely amazing. Definitely entering.

Do these come with the guitars???

  • http://twitter.com/bjwanlund BJ Wanlund

Not that I can see particularly, no.

  • Gokussr4

Ok, it doesnt matter, either way I have a guitar hero guitar at home, but if I do happen to get another, it would be nice

  • Patrick

Very cool. I’m still sporting my Guitar hero keychain I got with my free Transformers t-shirt.

    No, this is loose games.

  • http://oneofswords.com/ Dan (OneOfSwords)

Anything you have already imported into your library will work with GHWoR. If you have not imported GH5′s content, you can. I plan to but, like you, used GH5 as my “main game” and didn’t feel the need to import the songs into, like, itself. But now I have a reason.

Cool. I’m missing Smash Hits and World Tour. Those are the only two GH games I’m missing (just got GH5 and Band Hero.) Good luck to everyone.

  • Kingsy

    DRUM STICKS!!!! lol Entered.

I’ve already imported all these songs into my GH library but if I win I’ll give the games to my friends so that we can finally play online instead of having to come over to each other’s house.

    Thanks for the giveaway Dan/Activision.

I get mad when I think about GH and importing songs. They left so many of my favorite songs out. I would happily give my money to play them in GH5. I kept checking the GH website because they said there would be more but there never was. So frustrating…

  • http://oneofswords.com/ Dan (OneOfSwords)

It’s not for lack of trying, though. I know the team has gone back to various artists and labels to get more import tracks. It’s a lengthy process filled with red tape, apparently.

  • http://twitter.com/NBAKirkland NBA Kirkland (Nick)

I believe it. MTV/Harmonix was able to get it done for RB1 -> RB2 for almost all songs. That makes me think Activision could have done better.

  • http://oneofswords.com/ Dan (OneOfSwords)

I think the deals that were struck on each side had different terminology, and as any lawyer will tell you, the terminology matters.

The only one I don’t have is Guitar Hero 5 on the XBOX 360. I got all the other ones. That would be a great birthday present. Lol.

I have all the games on xbox but I would love to have them on ps3 because some of my friends don’t have it on xbox it would be nice to be able to play online with them for a change. Thank you for giving such a great prize away!!

  • Shadowman912

I just got my 360 and I am in desperate need of these games. I have been a Guitar Hero addict since it came out.

  • http://twitter.com/Darkfennec Lorna Kanami

Thank you for your giveaways! I am mostly just entering for the guitar charger. Those are hard to find where I live.

  • Craig

I love guitar hero and am practically addicted to it. All my wii games and ps2 games are guitar hero and i have 4 guitars, lol.

  • Vitor

    I need a new guitar :’(

  • Toxa_Kniotee

I need it, i need more games

  • Michael Coultrap

i have like 6 guitars for guitar hero and this would be a totally awsome deal! :/

  • Zdog924

I never thought I’dd like GH. But then my cousin made me play and It got competitive so i played more. Then I got addicted. I started on Easy and now I’m getting 100%s on Expert. I’ve won a lot of competitions. Now I have 2 Careers for every game I have. (The first one being “Zach” with no progress and one below it named “~ New Band ~” with all-out-everything (with the name for secrecy)) I dont’ have all the Guitar Hero games, just III, World Tour, 5, and Van Halen, but I’ve played them alland I gotta say. III has always been my favorite out of every Guitar Hero so far. I hope I like WoR more

  • Zdog924

I forgot, I have the complete band ( 2 guitars, Drums, and a mic ) but my drums got broke in tragic accident at my aunts house. Hehe

  • http://oneofswords.com/ Dan (OneOfSwords)

WoR actually “feels” like GHIII — lots of shreddy songs with a clear rock/metal focus, as well as the melodramatic rock fantasy storyline. The team looked at III, saw how many people liked it, and said “What made that work?” And then they built WoR with an eye to that. So I hope you do like what you see in WoR, as it’s sort of made for folks like you!

  • http://twitter.com/JoeGizzle Joe A Garcia

Congrats to the winners. I’ll win something eventually, dammit!

  • Gokussr4

What did I do wrong I was one of the first people to enter?

  • http://oneofswords.com/ Dan (OneOfSwords)

It was a random drawing, not a race. Check the contest FAQ that is linked in the above article — it explained how everything was going to work.

  • http://oneofswords.com/ Dan (OneOfSwords)

Yeah, giving away free games and stuff — what a rip-off!

  • Curtright

I wanted to win so bad :(

  • Gokussr4

o..im srry. I’ll remember that for next time
