So I’ve been thinking about this one for a little while. Obviously, when a game is relatively new, lots of people want to play it online, and it makes sense for me to support that new release with an online Playing With Swords session. But at the same time, I look at my shelf and go, damn, that’s a LOT of games, and all of them are playable online. We should do an old-school night.
Now, “old-school” here is relative because I’m only thinking Xbox 360 games released between launch and now — truly old-school for Activision would be 2600 games like Pitfall and River Raid. And I’m only thinking 360 because it arguably had the most robust online support at the time and we shouldn’t have any trouble running those games now, whereas asking people to connect with PS2s or Xbox 1s is more hassle than fun. And I just don’t have PS3 copies of a lot of these games, because I was working as an Xbox gaming editor when they came out. So that’s where my mind is at.
THAW, followed by THP8 and THPG.
I’ve heard a lot of people say they miss the older style Tony Hawk games, and the oldest that I have on my 360 shelf is American Wasteland — it doesn’t even incorporate the analog stick control changes that came in with Project 8. Then again, I liked the increasingly larger and open worlds of Project 8 and Proving Ground, too. Playing any of those again online would be fun.
Quake 4. Remember?
Then I started thinking, oh yeah, there’s Quake 4, too — that was an Activision game that featured online play. UPDATE: And while I thought Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2 offered online multiplayer, it’s local only — otherwise, that would have been a good choice. Other folks have suggested the original Marvel Ultimate Alliance instead.
They’re all still playable online, as far as I know — it’s just a matter of finding other people to play with you. And if you know when and where to show up, that’s not a problem.
Since games like COD4:MW and GHIII still have loyal fans in the lobbies, I am excluding them from my thinking; maybe we’ll do a special old-school COD or GH night accordingly. But if you could play one of the following games on Xbox Live in an old-school night, which would it be? Vote and we’ll get something going in the future.
Which elderly 360 game would you like to play?
