One of Swords Podcast 031: Violet Eggbeater

by Dan on August 26, 2010

Due to technical difficulties, this show is totally different than the one planned — it’s all Hugh and Dan babbling to each other and answering reader mail. That means we cover a lot of ground: epic recording fails, “Informer” by Snow, old radio promotion scams, Dan’s PAX plans, Hugh’s plans not to attend PAX, game show addictions, Canadian pronunciations, Twinkie milkshakes vs. Butterbeer, Hugh’s Knobs (not “Hugh Snobs”) and more bad impressions. Also, we finally answer the question, “What does Stan Lee smell like?”

I would totally try to talk the wife into moving to “Hugh’s Knobs, CA.”. I need to get out of PA and i am just looking for a good (work) reason.

I really wanted to go to PAX this year but it’s a week too late for me. Starting university that week. Probably not a good idea to miss the orientation on first day. Even for PAX. Hope you have fun ^.^

      Huge seems too loud..

Damn I just miss PAX on my way back from Hawaii.

This episode should have been called, “Violet Eggbeater; or, Casting Director’s Wet Dream.”

As a kid in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, I, and everyone I knew, called it Nintendo, then Super Nintendo. I never heard anyone call it NES or SNES until the podcasts came along recently. So Hugh is correct.

I think Hugh’s Knobs suits PA better than CA. I’d visit there.

Saying Quebec (like normal) is the english pronunciation. Saying Quebec (like a K) is if you’re speaking french because there’s no soft q’s in the french language. :P Yes, I’m Canadian.

I thought your chat about Snow was kinda funny , I actually met him a couple years ago , someone in my family knows his mom or something and i remember seeing him around. I still have his autograph somewhere. Im not to sure what hes doing now but i remember buying his last album around 2002.

      I am Canadian

Same here. No one I know says SNES. It was always Super Nintendo.

Listening to the show now, but Dan, I noticed you were echoing a few times early on in the podcast. I don’t know if it’s like this for the entire episode, but I’ll be sure to let you know if it is.

Somehow, the “Oh, bye there!” turned into “Oh, bye now!” Kinda, like “Oh, bye there!” better…

Any reason why this isn’t up on iTunes yet?

    • cubiclezombie

Probably… Better than Schnecksville I guess.

Hiccup on the back end. I just checked and I was able to download it on iTunes after my tweak to the post. Give it a shot — use Update Podcast in iTunes. Thanks for the heads-up.

      Like normal meaning what? Kwah-bec?

    • http://oneofswords.com/ Dan (OneOfSwords)

Oh yes. I spent most of my time in editing this show removing even more obvious echoes. Hugh had his mic set correctly, but not his headset’s earphones, so the Skype call was coming out of his computer’s speakers…and he didn’t know it was bleeding, and I didn’t realize it either. I minimized it this time and we’ll avoid it next time.

I vote Ohio. So it can be “Hugh’s Knobs, OH!”

YOU GUYS ARE ALL FREAKS OF NATURE

    • http://twitter.com/Smelloscope Jake Sallenbach

Yeah, the standard Q+U sound in english.

      Working. Thanks.

I’ve definitely heard it being called Snes. The weirdest pronounciation I’ve come accross it S. NES. I’ve also heard people refer to Marvel Ultimate Alliance as MUA but I’ve gotta agree with Hugh – it just sounds weird. =|

MUA and MUA2 – made me cringe (on board with Hugh, not a fan of that acronym)

I’m with Hugh… ‘Moo-ah’, ‘ness’ and ‘sness’ make me want to remove my ear drums with a melon scoop.

I still like ‘N-E-S’ and “Super Nintendo”.

PErhaps I’m just not as hardcore haha.

Super Nintendo – “ess-enn-ee-ess” or “the Super Nin”

    • http://oneofswords.com/ Dan (OneOfSwords)

I think it’s so funny, then, that internally here at Activision, it’s always called “moo-ah.” For reals!

LOL! Great show guys, I think Kat is great, but I enjoy the dynamic and humor when Hugh is on the show. Too bad about the Game Show cast, that sounded interesting, thank you, Dan, for making me feel better, I’m not the only one that happens too(ahem, Everyday Gamers Interview, ahem, take two). Great show, looking forward to hearing a post-PAX show and hearing how that experience was, say hi to Runic games and check out Torchlight II for me, while there, really wish I could see that first-hand. When is Shattered Dimensions being ported to PC? :O)
