One of Swords Podcast 030: Plastic, Not Plastique

by Dan on August 18, 2010

Far too much a capella singing from Dan on this week’s show — blame it on the full tracklist reveal for GH: Warriors of Rock. More interesting is the interview with Dan O’Leary, founder of n-Space — the developers who bring huge franchises like Call of Duty and James Bond to tiny handheld systems like the Nintendo DS. Kat and I also talk about the fancy collector editions of both COD: Black Ops and WoW: Cataclysm, Kat getting rude messages on Live, tales from Dan’s sleep-deprived radio days, and this week’s double-shot of GamesRadar-infused Playing With Swords events. Also, prepare for the worst Star Wars pun you’ve heard in a while.

Sorry to hear Kat’s been getting rude messages. File those complaints. The enforcment team does follow up on those.

College Humor did a funny sketch about girls treating a guy like they often do in online games. Funny but NSFW. Really NSFW so take down the link if it crosses the OneOfSwords.com line.

The DS is kiddy? >.< A slew of Castlevanias, Final Fantasys, Dragon Quests, etc. say hi, as does Professor Layton and a thousand other amazing games. The DS is probably my favorite platform these days outside of the PC. It gets some of the most unique experiences.

Of course, I don’t think Activision makes any of them. Most of the US DS development is just the lesser ports for kids. But man, that’s where Japan puts all its efforts these days. Discounting it is to discount a 2D gaming renaissance.

Don’t get angry. Kat and I have both played all the way through both Layton games and have preordered the third. My DS shelf, were you to see it, is a strange and very varied collection.

But yes…I think the DS audience — in America where we play our games and make the podcast — does skew young. With the sheer amount of family-friendly titles and E and T ESRB ratings on the platform, I am surprised that’s a surprise.

Oh, I know. I just felt that someone had to speak up for the insanity and awesome that’s hanging out on the DS, carving out its own special niche. I am quite pleased that you did the interview with n-Space, kind of an overlooked subset of game development.

Dan, you aren’t the only one who cares about Jethro Tull.

I just want to make a point for the record; I was there for the entirety of the latest Blur Playing with Swords session and I felt it necessary to point out that whether Kat remembers it or not she did in fact beat Hugh at least twice as Hugh came in dead last in at least two of the races.

P.S.: I knew that Live was full of jerks but to join your work related play session and then send inappropriate messages to your wife, that’s a whole new level of sleaze.

Dan, you’re not alone. Jethro Tull was one of my faves. Looking forward to playing Aqualung in Warriors of Rock!
