COD Black Ops multiplayer trailer!

by Dan on August 9, 2010

I have had TONS of people asking about when Treyarch will be talking about multiplayer for Black Ops…and it would appear they just made a statement via Josh “JD_2020″ Olin’s Twitter account and this video.

YouTube Preview Image

I had not seen any MP footage or gameplay — I’m not kidding, Treyarch is playing this super close to the vest — but oh my god. That looks awesome to me, and I say that knowing I’m going to have my ass handed to me the moment this game comes out in November.

awesome?yes original? hell no. Activision CEO: Hey guys I got this mw2 engine, we can create new maps and new weapon skins and sell it for $60, so who's with me?” Sorry, but I will NOT be getting this game..I plan on getting gran turismo, medal of honor, and little big planet 2 instead, these are real games.

  • Snowman

luis-1294 is right, i fucking hate call of duty games, why? its just a simple point and shoot game, nothing more to it. and I will be get other games instead like ac:brotherhood, killzone 3, resistance 3(unannounced but will be at PAX) and some other games that I cant think of atm. screw u activision ur gonna turn call of duty into guitar hero!!

  • DanCLE

Looks like a nice EVOlutionary game in the COD franchise. I think we are all waiting for one that is REVolutionary and brings a whole new feel to us. I know that for me and most people, we are getting bored with the same old stuff. Game looks fantastic, but I will most likely borrow it from a friend so I can play the campaign and then be done with it. Thanks for posting the vid!

  • Suicidal11

    I wasn't really hyped on this game,until now.All I have to say is wow.The map,gameplay,everything looks incredible.

  • http://twitter.com/Smelloscope Jake Sallenbach

If you actually watched the trailer you'd notice a number things that aren't even remotely related to MW2. ie. RC cars, and spring loaded knives. By the way, you shouldn't compare games like Gran Turismo and LBP2 to any kind of Call of Duty saying one is a real game. They are completely different genres. Oh, and I'm fairly certain the Activision CEO, Bobby Kotick, doesn't say “I got this MW2 engine”; why? Because Activision isn't the developer, they are the publisher. They don't decide how the game is made, that's up to Treyarch.

  • http://twitter.com/Smelloscope Jake Sallenbach

You sir, are extremely fast on the draw. As soon as clicked the link to the video from @JD_2020 to start watching, you already had an entire blog post. Loving the look of the game so far. Let the speculations begin!

  • http://twitter.com/Smelloscope Jake Sallenbach

While I completely agree that the game looks fantastic, I really don't think you should count Treyarch out just because of MW2. That's hardly fair to them.

  • Luis-1294

oh no they added a new killstreak omg the internet is going down!! lol big fucking deal, and yes I can comapre lbp and blackops whenever I want both are games and both are franchises but the difference is that lbp2 adds new stuff to the table, its not a game its a PLATFORM,create anything, play it, and share it, thats what I want. and do u think that neversoft decided to make 10 tony hawk and 14 guitar hero games with the same game mechanics and without adding anything new? NO.

  • http://twitter.com/Smelloscope Jake Sallenbach

Snowman, you are a hypocrite. You hate point and shoot games? You mean FPS games? Like Killzone 3, and Resistance 3? Simply because the Call of Duty games take on a more realistic approach that doesn't make it a “simple point and shoot” game compared to FPS games set in a fictional/futuristic/other science fiction world. And Call of Duty won't become Guitar Hero. They release one game a year under the title and the games (no matter the developer, or how much you personally don't like it) are made to exceptional quality. And considering the high standards everyone has for them, it's astounding how they can continually give players a game that is a step up from the previous one (it's almost as if they care about the games they make and want the players to have the best gaming experience they can provide).

  • Snowman

sledgehammer is making ANOTHER call of duty game so thats 3 developers working on ONE franchise it means that there will be one call of duty at least every 6 months, and they r not turning it to guitar hero and/or tony hawk? come on man wake up… also killzone 3 is not a simple point and shoot game, it has jetpacks, and close quarters combat, 3d,ps move support ect. and idk much about killzone 3 but hey its freaking imsomniac so we know that its gonna be awesome.

  • Brendan

looks cool, the rc car is from frontlines fuel of war, not on my list of games to buy, Sly Cooper Collections, Enslaved, F1 2010, Rage, Fallout New Vegas

  • http://twitter.com/Smelloscope Jake Sallenbach

I have no doubt that Killzone 3 will be a great game but the 3D and PS move support are simply because it's a playstation exclusive (remember that the game has to work on the PC and 360 still when it's multi-platform). And just because a game has multiple developers doesn't mean you're going to get the guitar hero effect (is that a coined term yet?), in fact it should mean that you're less likely to have that happen since each developer brings their own style to the game. This way the games each have their own unique feel depending on who the developer happened to be. As for the jetpacks in KZ3 you have to remember that it's taking place in a science fiction universe so they're able to throw that kind of thing in and have people rejoice. What if jepacks were put into a Call of Duty? I garuntee it wouldn't be well received. And in regards the CQC, that's just a little animation. Not something game changing (And I have doubts it will be in multiplayer, but if it is it should be interesting). And where are you getting this “at least every 6 months” anyway?

  • http://twitter.com/Smelloscope Jake Sallenbach

First things first: you should watch the language, there's no call for that. But I'm off topic. You still cannot compare 2 completely different games and say one is better than the other for no reason than you like it more. If you want to Play, Create, Share (The actual LPB slogan) then get LBP2 and have fun with it. As Dan has said numerous times on the site, if you don't like something, don't buy it and leave it at that. I should also point out that they did more than add 1 new killstreak;I mean come on, you know you want to blow someone up with a crossbow. Let's not forget this is only the first look at the muli-player(and I very much doubt you have every tid bit of knowledge regarding this game just like myself), so you shouldn't just write it off based on your imressions of a completely different developers game.

  • Devon

I don't even really like CoD and that looked cool!

  • Kenshin0513

So I thought the single player was good. The Multi-player looks better. Looks like Treyarch has really stepped it up. This may actually quiet the critics that the franchise will be dead after the IW rift.

  • http://oneofswords.com/ Dan (OneOfSwords)

Well, here's the problem I see with this evolution/revolution idea. As a franchise, people keep buying your games because they want to see more of what they like, only more so/improvements. That is evolution, and it is natural. This is, say, Sonic to Sonic 2, or Sonic 2 to Sonic 3 (or Terminator to Terminator 2, or Alien to Aliens…you get the point). A revolution takes the franchise in a new direction altogether — like Sonic Spinball, or Sonic & Mario and the Olympics or whatever it was, or DOA to DOA XBV. Hell, a case could be made that TH Ride was a revolutionary step over the earlier TH games. That's a huge change and, traditionally, they alienate the people who supported that franchise to begin with — but they are revolutionary, completely new ideas in a different context. So when people call for a revolution, I don't think they really know what they mean.

A revolution is throwing out the old and keeping very little of it with the new. In a case like Call of Duty, where literally millions of gamers have voted with their wallets to say “this is what we want,” a revolution is not called for — but something evolutionary MUST happen for the series to retain its vitality and interest. So new ideas within a franchise? Evolution, and necessary. Throwing out everything that works for the sake of doing something new? Not something I feel is right as often as it's suggested.

Can you articulate what would be a revolutionary step for COD that you would find satisfactory?

  • http://oneofswords.com/ Dan (OneOfSwords)

Hey, guys? I think every game should be taken on its own merits, but if what you see here is not your personal cup of tea, that’s fine. I don’t see the purpose of getting angry about a game you choose not to play; this game's existence does not threaten the ones you prefer, and you're spewing vitriol for no real reason.

For me, COD Black Ops is a game I am looking forward to playing. Play what you like — you have plenty of options.

  • Tim

Does this game look absolutely fantastic and amazing? Yes.
Will it be able to take on Halo: Reach? Unfortunately no.

  • http://oneofswords.com/ Dan (OneOfSwords)

    Does it have to?

I'm really baffled by this “one game must win and the others must lose” outlook. I firmly believe a lot of gamers are looking forward to both, will play both, and will enjoy both. It's not an election.

That said, if COD starts incorporating energy swords, or Master Chief goes to Russia, I might see your point. But until that time, I gotta keep scratching my head.

  • http://twitter.com/litrock Matt

Well, Metroid went from 2D side scrolling to FPS, so I think COD as a side scrolling action game a la Shadow Complex (with soldiers) would be poetically sound.

Also, I’d finally care about a COD game if they did that.

  • http://oneofswords.com/ Dan (OneOfSwords)

True — but we are also talking about a few different generations of hardware between those changes to Metroid. I mean, there was no Metroid game for N64, and by the time they revisited the franchise, the entire hardware landscape had actually undergone the revolution first!

  • http://abstract360.com Kamikaze8

Actually Black Ops will sell more than Reach simply because its multiplatform.

  • Blah

Actually, in a way this game does “threaten the ones I prefer” as you say, but not exactly in the Thunderdome-esque “2 men enter 1 man leave” way you might think.

We can all agree that Perks and such notwithstanding, CoD is an FPS. However, I like RPG’s and dislike FPS’s.

CoD sells like gangbusters; it gets a lot of support from its publisher and rightfully so since it’s a well made game that sells well for them. Therefore, more money and support is being given to it and not other games.

At the same time, other publishers, seeing the great success of the FPS, think they need a “Call of Duty Killer” to compete with them. Medal of Honor and even Halo could be thought of as an examples of this at a very base level, though they were not made solely to be “Call of Duty killers” (in fact, the first versions of these two are actually older than CoD), but the effect is the same. Make FPS’s, not RPG’s. Pretty soon, FPS’s become the vast majority of games being made. People often call the Xbox 360 the “FPS System” and it’s not difficult to see why with scenarios like this.

The video game industry has such a “me too” mentality from publishers that it can take years to break the cycle and is very slow to change. It takes real balls to come out with something new or different, and in this economic environment it’s even worse than usual.

This scenario may sound overtly simple, but that is how this game’s existence can “threaten the ones I prefer”.

  • http://twitter.com/Smelloscope Jake Sallenbach

I’ve heard this theory before, and I personally don’t think you’re trying very hard if you can’t find a good RPG. There are a lot out there. Just because FPS games seem to have the spotlight doesn’t mean there aren’t RPG’s being made. Right now I have a pre-order list about 8 games long and only 3 are FPS’ with the rest being RPGs.

  • http://oneofswords.com/ Dan (OneOfSwords)

FPS games have been their own genre alongside RPGs for years and years; I do not buy the argument that they threaten each other. COD’s success didn’t stop Mass Effect or Final Fantasy XI from being huge hits with RPG fans. And I can think of several PC RPGs that came out and were loved at the same time that Quake, Duke Nukem, and Unreal Tournament were all the rage — Planescape Torment, Fallout 2, Arcanum…one did not kill the other, and one is not killing the other now.

To me, this is like saying chicken sandwiches threaten hamburgers. Hamburgers might be more popular, but there are enough people craving chicken sandwiches that you can always find some. Maybe they don’t get the biggest, glossiest photo on the menu, but they are still very much available for those who prefer their taste.

Maybe it’s time to switch platforms?

  • Guest

From my standpoint, it’s the other way around. I’ll play along with your analogy.
Hamburgers (FPS’s) threaten chicken sandwiches (RPG’s). That’d be like saying Chik-Fil-A (Mass Effect) or Arby’s (Fallout) is a realistic threat to McDonald’s (Call of Duty). Or, If not McDonald’s, then Burger King (Counterstrike) or Wendy’s (Team Fortress) or any other national hamburger based fast food place that can be found in the 50 states or even beyond.

No one would argue that there are a ton more McDonald’s locations than Chik-Fil-A. And with McDonald’s, Burger King, Wendy’s, etc. all combined, there’s just no room in the fast food landscape to accommodate Chik-Fil-A in many regions of the country. It could be because of Chik-Fil-A’s own decision to not want to attempt to compete or because they realistically can’t due to infrastructure, market penetration, marketing, etc. However, one would have to think that if these rival fast food places weren’t so plentiful, they’d seriously reconsider expansion into areas they aren’t currently in.
These are all things videos game companies have to deal with as well. I can’t even GET Chik-Fil-A by me. Very similar to RPG’s that are only on PS3 in Japan.

Sure, McDonald’s does have chicken sandwiches, and “chicken” nuggets even. They even have what they call “Chicken Selects”, which I’ll admit are not terrible on occasion, akin to an FPS with token RPG elements. But when compared to an entity whose bread & butter is chicken, it’s not even a fair fight which one provides the better experience.

And no, I am NOT moving to the south so I can go to a Chik-Fil-A.
I suppose I’m stuck with McDonald’s attempt at the Chicken Sandwich then. While decent, it’s not the Chicken Sandwich of a Chik-Fil-A.

It’s not that I can’t find a good one or two. It’s just that there are not as many of them as there are FPS’s. Name one critically acclaimed RPG, and I could probably name 3 to 4 FPS’s of the same caliber.

My main point is that it’s about choices & variety. When a given genre has more total games released, there’s bound to be some amount of subtle differences within those games of that genre just because there’s more to pick from, therefore giving the consumer more choice. It’s the difference between Call of Duty and Halo. One’s modern war, the other sci-fi. Outside of Mass Effect, Dragon Age, & Fallout (and that’s even ME & Fallout PLAYING like FPS’s), there’s not much more past that, whereas just within the Call of Duty/Modern Warfare franchise there’s about 4 or 5 games of that quality. It also doesn’t help that the same company makes ME & DA. They don’t want to compete with themselves, so they don’t go full out with both of them like they would if these games were made by other companies. The DLS disparity between ME2 & DA is partly evident of that. But that’s another topic altogether.

At any rate, getting only 2 or 3 RPG’s in an entire year, as opposed to 10+ FPS’s doesn’t yield the same variety within the genre. That’s all.

  • http://twitter.com/litrock Matt

Oh, I know. I just threw it in because when I think of interesting things, that’s the first thing I think of. Those types of games are easily my favorite sub-sub-genre, and they don’t really exist anymore.

  • WALLACE98

    COOL

  • http://www.freexboxmicrosoftpoints.com Free PSN Codes

    0:56 – 1:00 was sweet!

In my opinion, gameplay wise, this looks a lot like Modern Warfare 2. Needless to say I’m not sure if it actually does indeed feel the same way, but it looks like it takes the same amount of bullets to kill people, I saw a care package in there, etc. The graphics in Black Ops look a bit better (according to this trailer).

I actually pre-ordered this for free so if I don’t like it, there’s no loss. But either way, a lot of my friends will be getting it and it is always a blast to play with them, even if I don’t like it. Heck, the only reason I still play Modern Warfare 2 is because my friends play it.

    Thanks Dan
