SDCC 2010: The Activision Party

by Dan on July 21, 2010

Activision kicked off the San Diego Comic-Con in swanky style Wednesday night with a party for retailers and press at the downtown club Stingaree. Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions was joined by James Bond 007: Blood Stone, GoldenEye 007, Bakugan: Defenders of the Core, and the forthcoming DLC for Transformers: War for Cybertron — all in playable form. Several of the developers (and one very special guest) were on hand for interviews, too; I cornered Beenox’s Thomas Wilson again to discuss the weird thing he did with his face in the infamous E3 video. Assuming the recording is audible (the party was loud), you’ll hear that interview some time next week.

This is one of those things that’s better seen than explained, so here are a handful of Kat‘s excellent photos from the evening.

This was a split-level affair, with gameplay kiosks on two floors

Transformers to the left, Spider-Man to the right. Just out of shot: Blood Stone.

Shattered Dimensions had its own dedicated area upstairs, too. It was consistently packed.

Stan Lee himself joined the party shortly after it got underway. He's a popular guy this week.

I wound up getting interviewed by Jeremy Soule, the unsung hero of Activision. I cover Activision for the public, but he covers Activision for Activision!

Stan Lee gave several media outlets interviews -- watch for them soon.

I do not know why Thomas Wilson from the Beenox Shattered Dimensions dev team keeps granting my requests for interviews. Man has the patience of a saint.

For a convention that will be equal parts exhilarating and exhausting, this party was a nice way to kick it off.  The convention proper starts in the morning, and I’ll check in as often as I can from Twitter and write up longer blog entries when I get the chance.
