One of Swords Podcast 026: Pet a Nonexistent Cat

by Dan on July 21, 2010

If I sound weary this week, it’s because I didn’t get a lot of sleep — but I did get a lot of questions about whether or not COD was going to start charging for multiplayer. (It’s not.) More entertaining topics that Kat and I tackle on this show include Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions at Comic-Con, classic arcade games, radical pricing plans, Disturbed, the last word in MUA2 DLC, bad gaming laws, Kinect’s worth, Kat’s sexy voice, the winner of the super-rare Zune, and a secret video project is revealed “shocksclusively.”

Great podcast! Glad to hear the cats getting some recognition. My wife and I are huge feline fans, so it's always fun to hear a cat talking in the background.

      I'm not a cat!

I want to point out that Space Giraffe is a great game. And that you comparing to to Totem Ball hurts way down deep. Space Giraffe is unappreciated genius. Just wanted to let you know.

As usual, great show. Aside from you being totally wrong about Space Giraffe.

I was the first review out of the gate on Space Giraffe, and I scored it very low. Its creator — understandably — took that review very personally even though I was only commenting on what the game offered and how it presented itself to the player. But when he started not only cursing me out in public but selling t-shirts with my name on them…I felt that was going too far. It has become somewhat infamous.

SG is one of those games that has been completely polarizing — most people feel it's brilliant or worthless. I have spoken to both camps and read both kinds of reviews. I thought it was severely flawed. And after all this time. I still tell people that SG has a free XBLA demo and they can try it themselves to see how they feel about it.

As a MSFT shareholder it was great to hear all of the talk about Kinect. I am not sure what this has to do about Activision since I do not think that they have announced any games for the device. I hope it means that Kinect titles will be announced soon from Activision and below the $50 price point. Always enjoy the great gaming chat.
PS Hugh Sterbakov rocks! Please let him know to feed his ego.

This episode needed more LOLcat references….

Only 15 minutes into it so far, but I wanted to address the “pay for multiplayer thing.”

First, did Pachter open his mouth someplace other than OXM? Because in the OXM article, he says he thinks that Call of Duty would do this with MW3 in 2011 (of course, we don't even know it will *be* MW3 next year, with all that's happened with Infinity Ward recently, right?). Not with Black Ops this year.

I still think there's no way this can happen in the current climate, and so Pachter is full of it.

I even did a blog post about it: http://davebuttoned.blogspot.com/2010/07/paying…

Until I read the OXM article, I had never heard of Pachter. Is he generally as full of it as I've heard?

Oh hi there! Great show, Dan. I enjoy the podcasts you make for us, it really helps pass the time by at work. You said you were trying to keep the shows shorter, that kinda bums me out. I enjoy the longer more “content rich” shows. :-(

Anyway, thanks for all your hard work and effort. Hello to Kat as well. Take care and I'll comment again later on.

His job is to predict. He is not held accountable if he is wrong. He does not actually care if he is wrong; his job is to make predictions and call attention to his employer, Morgan Wedbush Securities. And the fact that I can type that financial institution's name from memory is proof that it works. But I don't take what he says as gospel truth, because he's making educated guesses. And in this case, his guess needed more education.

Ah, please don't read into my personal interest in Kinect and the announcement of its price coinciding with the day we recorded the podcast as any sort of Activision endorsement. No idea what Activision is planning in regards to Kinect or Move for that matter. This podcast is not strictly a show about Activision, and I always try to bring in topics that affect all gamers. Kinect and Move are both those kind of topics.

Awesome to hear about the cats at the end.
