One of Swords Podcast 011: Blame My Mother

by Dan on April 8, 2010

This week, Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions Associate Producer Kevin Umbricht talks about the game’s big coming-out party at WonderCon and gives us some hints as to what’s in store for the rest of the year. (He also busts me for a comic-related Freudian slip and explains why he is glad Gwen Stacy is dead.) Plus, Kat and I talk about cheap XBLA games, free MW2 sessions, pop-punk-emo, our fantasy lives as Transformers, some misinformation about Blizzard, our fantasy celebrity love interests, and why Blur is bigger than ever before.

    And of course Kat’s Gamertag:

Sorry for the echo you’ll hear on this show. I spent a lot of time trying to minimize it but really it’s a lesson for next time. Every time Kat turned her headset mic my way, it picked me up and my open air mic picked her up. Won’t make that mistake again.

However, the Spider-Man interview, except for Kevin being a little shy and therefore soft in the first half, is my “standard” setup and I am happy with how that sounds. That’s what it’s “supposed” to sound like, and that’s the equipment I wanted to use from the beginning. Blame the backorders! :)

no more seductive “oh hai there”s haha it's awkward for the listeners.

Oh and with regards to the podcast, maybe you could offer two versions. The 1hr version and an extended version for listeners at work.

I mean, theoretically, you wouldn't have to do hardly anymore work. The slim version has all the editing and would take more time. So just publish a version that is halfway between uncut and fully edited. While your working towards the slim version you'd have an extended version just staring you in the face.

Guess what? I got a fever! And the only prescription.. is more O.O.S!

I remember what Stan Lee said in that Gamepro interview: It wasn't gravity, Spider-Man, or Green Goblin that killed Gwen Stacy. It was the writer – Gerry Conway!

I have a few general comments. Steam has had free-to-play weekends in the past, which I remember reading about over at cheapassgamer.com. I recall Killing Floor and Team Fortress 2 having free weekends, but am not sure how often this is done.

Also, I don't see what the big deal about you cosplaying as Spider-Man would have been. I mean, Dan Elektro used to do it!
“Spider-Dan, Spider-Dan. Gamepro Editor Spider-Dan. Fighting off Major Mike, Silver Surfer look-alike.” I don't know why I remember that song…

Nice show! I'd like to comment about the MW2 Map pack. I'm one of those whom have bought in the first day because love this game, but I really think it is a lot of money for what they have delivered. I tried to evaluate the money I spend based on the subjective “fun factor”, and I can say that the new maps didn't add a thing to that factor. MW2 continues to be a lot of fun to play, with or without the new maps, but in the future they will have to offer a little bit more to make me spend this money again…

Great podcast, as always (not even just because I was mentioned!). I really enjoyed Spider-Man 2, but even the more recent Web of Shadows left me feeling … a bit cold. Too big of a world with too few things to do. The idea of a more focused game appeals to me.

Also, I say keep the podcast long. Of course, I listen at work. There's no such thing as 'too long.'

I agree. I like having the podcast longer than an hour, and by doing this you could please both parties.
