One of Swords Podcast 007: Secret Asian Man

by Dan on March 11, 2010

Live from somewhere vaguely near GDC 2010 in San Francisco, it’s another road show for the podcast. With some prodding from the MegaMailbag, Kat and I talk about her first time playing Blur, MW2 milestones, Dan’s shameful love of power pop, undercover cops in Hong Kong, the Nolan Bushnell biopic, why GH Metallica isn’t exportable into GH5, in-game advertising, and, um, the rant from last week. Better still, I got to talk with Stephen van der Mescht from True Crime developer United Front Games, and he talks about beer. All this and Blur multiplayer beta codes, too!

And last but not least, Kat’s gamertag:

We recorded this one on wireless lavalier mics to a video camera, then dumped the video track and just worked on the audio in Soundtrack Pro. Then I tried some noise reduction to get rid of the ambient sounds of the room we were in, and I think it turned out okay…but it’s going to sound a little different. (Also, I apologize for the distortion on the UFG interview whenever I spoke…clearly, I need to back off from the mic with that system!) We’re trying all kinds of recording methods; whichever one is the easiest is the one we want on the road.

Great podcast. Loved the interview. I had no idea who UFG were, but I've played a good portion of the games their group worked on in the past. Sounds solid. Even if the other True Crimes were … well, let's be nice and say they had a certain amount of janky charm.

Also, Dan, you REALLY need to make it a point to see Shutter Island. It's like a forgotten Hitchcock film fallen out of the 50s, rich and beautiful and amazing.

I liked your DLC discussion (although I would love to see a Guitar Hero: Heart game, but then again, that's just me, I happen to have a thing for melodic rock), and I loved hearing the explanation for DLC.

And there was all sorts of other awesome sauce stuff this week, enjoyed it thoroughly.

And wasn't Absolute Entertainment also one of David Crane's post-Activision ventures?

      Dan,
Regarding your “tirade” last week, I was neither entertained nor offended (as you suggest). However, I was surprised. Having listened to you for a while now, I had expected your reaction to be more dismissive. It was a stressful time, to be sure. But I would advise you to maintian composure if at all possible. And if you can't, edit that shit out.
If you're going to be angered by stupid people on the internet, you're going to die a very unhappy man. No one wants that. (Except maybe the stupid ones.)
Take it easy, Dan my man.
