What’s going on at Infinity Ward

by Dan on March 1, 2010

I saw the same G4 story you did. When I learn something I’ll pass it on but so far I don’t know anything.

UPDATE March 2, 12:54 AM:
Still don’t know much, but this SEC filing was posted, and this phrase within it makes me doubt we’re going to hear much of anything in the way of concrete details:

“The Company is concluding an internal human resources inquiry into breaches of contract and insubordination by two senior employees at Infinity Ward. This matter is expected to involve the departure of key personnel and litigation.”

The phrases “internal human resources inquiry” and “litigation” almost ensure that nobody involved will be able to say anything, whether they want to or not. Companies never talk about lawsuits until they’re settled, and I’ve never heard of a company that had personnel issues that was willing to come out and talk about them…remember how officially quiet Gertsmanngate was? Nobody got a straight answer from any of the involved parties. The less any of the principals say, the better it is for them. Of course, that just makes the rumor mill kick into overdrive…but the rumor mill doesn’t have to appear before a judge.

I strongly suspect nobody will be able to say anything unless whatever expected lawsuits address this matter go to court and become a matter of public record. Until then, everybody’s probably going to clam up for legal reasons. I think a lot of “news” tomorrow will be rumor and gossip rather than fact.

Tomorrow promises to be…well, fun isn’t the word. I’m going to bed. Maybe if I’m lucky, I will die in my sleep.

UPDATE: March 2, 10:30AM
No such luck.

The only thing I want to clarify this morning…well, it almost stuns me that I have to clarify it. I was not there, I do not know exactly who showed up at IW’s offices and what was done…but I am giving you my personal guarantee that nobody was murdered or kidnapped by mercenaries. I have seen these incredible assumptions out there, and I have watched them spread to the point where I felt I had to say something.

And what I want to say is: Seriously, folks? Seriously? Activision makes fantasy wargames; it doesn’t play them out. Activision is a videogame publisher, not a videogame. When there are serious personnel disputes or layoffs that extra personnel is brought in to make sure it all goes smoothly. There’s a difference between extra people to make sure things don’t get nasty and dudes roping down from choppers with knives in their teeth. It stuns me that that’s the mental image people had of what, by all rational accounts, was a tense business meeting.

Every time you pass around a completely mental rumor like that “ZOMG KIDNAPPERZ,” you are hurting everyone and everything in gaming. I don’t care if you’re a fan in a forum or a member of the media — if you don’t think rationally for a moment, resist the temptation to spout off sensationalist nonsense, and make that key distinction between fantasy and reality, gaming will never get out of its cultural ghetto.

End o’ soapbox.

    This smells like an exclusive.

  • Joe

Seriously? Why would Activision do this, if they did anything. What would happen to Activision if the company was brought up on murder/kidnapping charges?

  • JalenJade

Seeing as I don't watch G4… what is “this?”

  • joyguy

Dude, it's the USA, pretty sure murder and kidnapping are constitutional rights, right after the part that says, “we the people have the right to pack heat, and anyone who says diff'rent is a stinkin' commie”

  • Aaron

IW not getting enough press right now I guess

There are reports, nothing confirmed at this stage mind you, that the heads of Infinity Ward have been escorted out of the building by security. In other words, fired. But this is rumor at this point. Tomorrow should be… interesting.

Murder and kidnapping? What on earth are you talking about?

  • fluffrick

Blimey, Dan – there are days when I really don't envy your job…

It's a knee-jerk reaction at this point to point the finger of blame solely at ATVI right now. As you stated, there's going to be a lot of speculation from here on out while the principals in this case are likely prohibited legally from saying much else.

It's easy to point fingers. It's much more difficult to maintain an impartial stance until more facts hopefully become known.

  • http://www.cheapcheapgeek.com/ Karl

Dan's right. We probably won't officially know what went down for a long time, if ever. But like Gertsmanngate through the more reliable rumors (I know. I know. A contradiction.) we'll probably get an idea of what happened.

While nobody likes getting fired, West and Zampella are probably being courted by publishers and/or venture capitalist right now. They did make the best-selling game of 2009 after all.

The one I pity is Dan. As the Activision goodwill ambassador his immediate future is going to be tough.

  • Joe

Sorry, that was back right when it happened and that's what I thought it sounded like (need to stop watching as much T.V.). Anyway, do you think that this is related to the whole debacle Activision and IW had when it came to putting “Call of Duty” on Modern Warfare 2?

  • Craig

Why be impartial when it's far easier to fly off the handle and immediately blame Activision? I just finished reading the comments in response to this story over on Kotaku and it just makes me shake my head. Everyone is blaming Activision without considering the possibility that these two guys might have been doing something that wasn't in the company's best interests. Obviously I don't know what went down and until I do my mind is open to any possibility.

Besides, it's highly unlikely that either side is totally at fault. These matters are rarely that cut-and-dried, and the issue probably goes back over months, if not years.

I'm already seeing a bad reaction to this, a knee jerk reaction.

There has to be a reason for such a removal of position and I'm really surprised that people are failing to see this and still think they were fired for no reason. But it's easy to blame the 'evil domination corporation' =/

    Watching eagerly, especially from here.

Everything sounds really bizarre. You'd think that Infinity Ward would be the last developer to have people fired/laid off/whatever.

  • erichsouza

No breaking and entering Rainbow Six style?? Shame…
But when someone have to be let go and need 'assistance' from external people, it's always an awkward situation, no matter what actually happened.

  • http://oneofswords.com/ Dan (OneOfSwords)

That is true. You don't call in folks unless you are concerned that you will need folks. So this must have been one very tense meeting.

  • http://twitter.com/mrfusion mrfusion (Weston)

Bobby Kotick is going to address IW on the whole situation.
