Formspring “Ask Me Anything”

OK, I know it’s the latest self-indulgent trend, but I’m guilty of wanting to try it. You can always ask me questions here or at oneofswords at gmail dot com or by calling the podcast but what the hell, there’s this too.

Hi there! I'm not sure if you've received a ton of questions about this by now or not, but I've got some questions/issues I'd like some information on: it's in regard to the DLC for Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2. I understand that it's been stated it was a limited time offer, but why wasn't that stated BEFORE it came to pass? I browse many websites on games and none of them said it was when it was first released, and how is that allowed? I also know that Activision has lapsed its rights for MUA, but how does that affect content that was already made? The characters were created before the end of the contract, so why would they have to be pulled when said contract ends? The content was already released so it wouldn't be in violation of any terms at present or in the future as I understand it. It would just mean no more could be created. I also have more questions, but I'll save those for if you'd like to address them at a later date. If you'd answer these ones for me, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thank you!

I am wondering about the downloadable content for Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 as well. I just bought the PS3 version unaware that the six extra characters who were supposed to be available for download at $9.99 for 5 and $1.99 or something for the other one have not been available since before the end of the year. I know that downloadable content is created to get extra money for items that could have just been included in the game. So then why isn't it available anymore. The game itself is still for sale. I obviously just bought it. Does Activision not want my money? If that is the case I'll remember that next time before shelling out $55 for a PS3 game in the first place. Considering all the hype that was out there about the downloadable characters and the fact that that information still features prominently on several Web sites including the official game site, the Marvel site and others it seems like that information should still be available. Especially since it was for purchase. I'm not asking for anything for free. I just want the features that were super hyped. Not everyone has the resources to run out and by a game in the first several months after it is released. What are the rest of us supposed to do? You want to pull hyped online content then pull the game off the shelves.

“A limited time offer…why wasn't that stated BEFORE it came to pass?”

Um…it was. Please see the press release as posted by the following three sites (which are just the first three I found):

    http://news.teamxbox.com/xbox/21408/Marvel-Ulti…

    http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article…

    http://www.gamershell.com/companies/activision/…

Read the first line of that press release. It was stated with its expiration date from day one.

“I browse many websites on games and none of them said it was when it was first released, and how is that allowed?”

How is it “allowed” that the media outlets didn't mention it? Well, I think you have the ask the editors of those media sites. Clearly, some did report that rather important detail. I would ask whatever media outlets and gaming sites you're thinking of as to why they didn't mention it.

Thanks for replying, now what about the second part of my post, which is WHY was it only available for a limited time? Once it's created, there shouldn't be any reason to pull it off, especially in the case of the PS3 where they pulled the content a whole week before the “expiry” date. You can still sell copies of the actual game, thus you should still be able to sell the DLC to people. Is there something I'm missing?

I am finding out the answer to this now, but I suspect it was simply legally mandated to be from Date A to Date B.
