Blur: Now with Twitter, officially

by Dan on February 24, 2010

In case you missed the official announcement from Bizarre Creations’ Twitter feed earlier today, the rumors that flew around some months ago have been confirmed: Blur has customized Twitter functionality baked right into the game.

“But I played Uncharted 2,” I hear you exclaim. “That had Twitter functionality too.” True, but it only let you say pre-set phrases; you couldn’t add any sort of personal commentary, which for me is the entire point of Twitter. Blur lets you customize the message, so you can send out a challenge or brag about your best time and preface that with an @name and a personal message, so your friends know exactly to whom you are talking trash. That’s right, I used “whom.” You’ll have multiple opportunities in the game to tweet about what you’ve recently achieved, what you’ve earned and unlocked, and what you’re spending your time on in Blur.

Screenshots after the jump.

Bizarre Creations’ community manager Ben Ward not only sent out the first official tweet from the game today but posted some screenshots of himself doing it. Here’s the text entry interface (which does work with the chatpad or a USB keyboard, I am happy to say):

And this is the last-minute confirmation that the game gives you before you push that tweet out to the Twitterverse (I zoomed in a little on this screenshot so it’s easier to read here). As you can see, your comments go before the game’s auto-generated message:

The game’s tweets use the hashtag #blurthegame (which is also a valid URL for the game’s homepage if you throw a dot-com after it) and Twitter support will be functional in the multiplayer beta, which is coming up next month. (I will have more info on how to get into that public multiplayer beta shortly.) The press is getting a peek at Blur over the next two days (which is one of the reasons I’m here in England — I will be seeing it too and reporting back) so there’s a high chance you’ll see a few editors chiming in from within the game. And then as regular people start getting into the beta, you’ll probably see it a fair amount more.

Boy, Blur is looking better and better. I may just be willing to pay 60 bucks for that.

This isn't even gameplay — wait until you see that. :) I saw it last year at E3 and was very disappointed…but that was a long time ago, and the team has made some very major improvements. It's one of the reasons I'm happy to yap about it now, because it's one of those times where a game was delayed for all the right reasons. I think the multiplayer beta will turn some heads.

Maybe. I have loved Burnout since it inception on PS2, and Blur scratches my itch for that accessible thing — strategic options, fast thinking, but not a sim and no heavy choices to make. The multiplayer beta is a good, free way to find out if it’s her kind of thing.

Could this finally be the driving game which gets my wife to pick up a controller and play something other than “Burnout Paradise”? Here's hoping…
